Sometimes it’s hard to know what to do. When facing a big decision you might have to choose between what is good and what is best. So when you come to a fork in the road how do you know which way to go? Or when there is a gray area in a choice you have to make what should you chose? How can you know God’s will in any particular situation? Here are some questions you can ask yourself that will help you know God’s will:
- What does the Bible say about your situation? 2 Timothy 3:16-17
- What decision will best show my love for God and others? Matthew 22:37-40
- What decision would attract the most people to Jesus? Matthew 28:18-20
- What would Jesus do? 1 John 2:6
- What decision would give God the most glory? 1 Corinthians 10:31-33
- What would be the wisest thing to do after asking God for his wisdom, understanding, discernment or direction? James 1:5-6
- What would be the most unselfish thing to do? Philippians 2:3-5
- What decision will make you free to serve Christ and not held captive nor in bondage or enslaved by someone or something? Proverbs 22:7, Luke 16:13, John 8:31-36, 2 Corinthians 6:14-18
- What decision will show the fruit of the Spirit? Galatians 5:22-26
- What decision will please God the most? Romans12:1-2, Hebrews 11:6
Most people want the answer to the direction of their life on their time, in their way and in their power. The greatest decisions require God’s timing and God’s power. After asking yourself the above questions and giving careful study of the relevant scriptures you should have a good understanding of what God wants you to do but you have to trust God’s timing, God’s power, and God’s purpose.
For even greater study I highly recommend Experiencing God: Knowing and Doing the Will of God by Henry Blackaby. It is the best Bible study I have ever done. Personally I’ve been through it at least four times. It will require about 30-40 minutes a day, five days a week, for 12 weeks but it will be worth it. It’s even better if you can do it with a family member, friend, or small group.
What has helped you the most in knowing God’s will or what helps you the most when making a decision?
